When we think of wellbeing, we think of ways that we can actively take care of our physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing. But did you know that taking care of our wellbeing is actually the key to happiness, resilience and purpose?

At Strathcona, our Wholebeing philosophy has become a key aspect to teaching and learning, equipping our girls with the necessary skills to be confident and resilient young women.

Our Wholebeing approach focuses on a holistic framework designed to nurture students from Early Learning to Year 12, ensuring they develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. Wholebeing focuses on personal wellbeing and is embedded across multiple domains in the School – from pastoral care, academic support, community connections, and co-curricular activities, creating a school community where every student feels valued and supported.

Dean of Students at Strathcona Girls Grammar, Megan Boyd, says that the Wholebeing program allows each girl to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. ‘We know that learning and wellbeing are deeply interconnected. When a student feels safe, supported, and valued, they are much more likely to be a resilient learner, capable of problem-solving, adapting to challenges, and engaging meaningfully in their education,’ says Megan. ‘It’s also been shown to increase community connection and participation in co-curricular opportunities, leading to higher student engagement.’

As part of the School’s Wholebeing initiative, Strathcona participates in Wellness Wednesdays, encouraging girls to engage in self-reflection and to explore their interests and talents.

‘On Wellbeing Wednesdays, our students look forward to participating in student-led house challenges and activities that improve their wellbeing, encourage them to make new connections and develop a sense of belonging to their house. Our fur buddy, Bailey, visits us on Monday’s, and throughout the SOUL and Feliciter programs, our girls are reminded that maintaining balance in life is essential for growth and success,’ Megan adds.

At Strathcona, Wholebeing is a lived experience, shaping unstoppable young women who lead a life that prepares them for success both at school and into the future. Through Wholebeing, Strathcona cultivates a school culture where students are not only happy and healthy but also empowered to face life’s challenges with strength, confidence, and determination.

‘An integral part of the Wholebeing framework is for students to engage with one another to support a growth mindset,’ Megan says. ‘One way we support students is through mentorship. This is student-centred and built around one-on-one conversations that encourage reflection and self-awareness. This approach strengthens communication, empathy, and resilience, empowering our students to navigate challenges with confidence and build meaningful relationships.’

With a more holistic focus, the Wholebeing framework equips students with the skills required to navigate challenges with strength and confidence in an ever-changing world.
